Yesterday’s Interval Training and Today’s Run Statistics (8-25-12)


Yesterday’s interval training statistics from Endomondo:

Total Duration (including an approximately 5 minute warm-up walk and a 5 minute cool-down walk): 27m:07s
I didn’t have a lot of time to run yesterday, so I tried running some intervals.  The Endomondo Pro app for the iPhone has a setting that allows you to do some interval training.  I’d never done intervals before, so I chose the “Standard” interval training mode.
Basically, the standard interval session is for beginners (like me) because it lasts for 21 minutes and breaks the training down like this:
  • 5 minutes of low intensity running
  • 1 minute of medium intensity running
  • 1 minute of low intensity running
  • 1 minute of medium intensity running
  • 1 minute of low intensity running
  • 1 minute of medium intensity running
  • 1 minute of low intensity running
  • 1 minute of medium intensity running
  • 1 minute of low intensity running
  • 1 minute of medium intensity running
  • 1 minute of low intensity running
  • 1 minute of medium intensity running
  • 5 minutes of low intensity running
The first 10 minutes of interval training were great.  I felt like I was really following the program and switching between low and medium intensity running.  The second half of the program felt a little difficult for me, though.  I started feeling like I couldn’t keep up the “medium” intensity pace for a whole minute at points during the second half of the workout.   I would run quicker than usual for 30 seconds or so, and then my body would naturally start to run slower again to recover.

It felt similar to what it was like when I first started running and I was using the run-walk method with the “Get Running” app.  It was really challenging!  I guess intervals are an important part of getting faster, though, so I definitely need to incorporate more of them into my workouts!

Today’s workout was an easy run at an average distance for me.  I would have liked to have gone further today, but my legs were feeling a little sore and I was more tired than usual.  I’m guessing this is due to the fact that I ran intervals last night.  I seem to need a rest day in between each workout in order to function best while running.
