A Little SUP (Stand-up Paddleboarding) Cross-training!

Today, my sister and I decided to do a little cross-training by taking Stand-up Paddleboarding (SUP) lessons and we had a great time!

Beginning the SUP Lesson

 

Our instructor took us out into the bay on Long Beach Island in Harvey Cedars, New Jersey.  We started with the basics: how to bring the board into the water, stand on the board, stay balanced, and paddle.  Then our instructor demonstrated different paddling techniques to move forwards, turn, and stop our forward motion.

Once we covered the basics, we were taken under a bridge, which forced us to move down onto our knees on the board, and then stand again and re-balance.  We practiced the different paddling techniques in a small, calm inlet just beyond the bridge, then moved back under the bridge and out to paddle along the bay.

The water in the bay was a bit choppy, but we were all able to stay balanced and keep paddling!  We paddled around a small island filled with seagulls, herons, and other small birds.  It was a beautiful sight and, as I was paddle boarding past the island, I wished I had brought a (waterproof) camera!

As we paddled back to shore, I felt like I was walking on water!  Paddle boarding is such a fun, relaxing sport and a great way to cross-train!  I highly recommend it!
